Sadegh Amoli Larijani (صادق آملی لاریجانی) is just one of five brothers with powerful positions in the Islamic Republic of Iran. For several years, the Larijani brothers were particular favorites of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khameini, who was ready to appoint them to any empty post.
Their father is Grand Ayatollah Hashem Amoli, who had fled Qom to Najaf in the 1930s to avoid persecution by the Shah. It was there that three of the five brothers were born, including Sadegh. He was less than two years old when his family moved from back to Qom from Iraq.
Sadegh Larijani had an interest in mathematics just like several of his brothers and had a diploma in math. Like his brothers Javad and Ali, he considered going to the US to complete his education, but opted for Qom Seminary instead.
Larijani was young during the revolution of 1978 and the war between Iran and Iraq, yet was not involved in revolutionary activities during that time. Instead, he was busy with his education and the work he did assisting his father and father-in-law. In 1989, Larijani began teaching at Qom Seminary after achieving the highest degree in jurisprudence.
Larijani entered politics in 1997 with the announcement of his candidacy for the third session of the Assembly of Experts. By the time he was 37, Larijani had been selected as a representative of people of Mazandaran in the Assembly of Experts, becoming a member of its board of directors.
In 2001, after his four year term in the assembly, the Supreme Leader selected Larijani as a Jurist member of Guardian Council.
When protests against the result of the 2009 presidential elections broke out, the Supreme Leader appointed Larijani as head of the judiciary, replacing Ayatollah Hashemi Shahroodi. He remained at this post for nearly ten years.
In 2015, after the death of Ayatollah Mahdavi Kani, Larijani was selected as the Director of Board of Trustees of Imam Sadegh University. In 2018, when Ayatollah Hashemi Shahroodi passed away, he became the Head of the Expediency Discernment Council and obtained the empty seat of Ayatollah Hashemi Shahroodi in Guardian Council.
